POM

As many of you know, every now and again I will be sent new products to test and give my opinion on. Now the thing is I will always give my honest opinion. The other side of this is that I have turned down a lot of requests for reviews simply because I have no genuine interest in the product or service. I also get a lot of requests from online retailers who send me these emails asking me to link to them and promote them. Now the latter is strange because as if I am going to promote a site I have never purchased from so I can say I am happy with all aspects of the experience.
So every now and again I receive a product that I personally really like. One I received recently is POM, Pomegranate Juice which is now available Down Under. I like this product and was impressed with how I felt. Friends or something

I was watching something on TV the other night that reminded me of what friends are. What I found fascinating is that when I refocused my thoughts and started looking at the people around me I realised how pointless the term friend was these days. I’ve always been very big on using words only if they mean something. What I mean by that is I don’t say I love someone unless I mean it. I don’t call someone a friend unless I mean it etc. Now there are very few words I use loosely which is why you will rarely hear me say I hate someone, simply because I don’t hate anyone. Secondly I beleive terms such as friend, love, husband etc should mean something and when someone hears me use them they should know that is a big deal.
I guess I am over hearing people use these terms lightly. They lose all there meaning and credibility if they are thrown around. I’m sure this situation has been made worse by social sites and chat which refer to people as friends but I won’t get sucked into it. If I do you have my permission to jump through the phone line and punch me.
So one of the things I have thought about lately is the word ‘friend’. So I thought I would just let you into my world a little by explaining what a friend to me is and perhaps isn’t.
A friend is someone who you know is honest with you. A person you can be honest with. This means if you disagree with something they do or say you can speak your mind. If you can’t be open with a friend about their bad choices and give them your opinion then they are not really a friend. If someone is a friend than you can’t sit back and hear them talk about stuff and think to yourself ‘oh, it’s none of my business’. A friend will tell a friend if they are being stupid or making bad decisions. It doesn’t mean they will change their minds but friends should have the respect for each other to accept a friends feedback.
A friend is someone who you know will be at your doorstop if you need them, no matter what. A friend is someone who makes sure you are safe when out. The worst kind of friend is the one you go out with and then they get drunk or disappear. What was the point?
A friend is someone you know you can go months without talking to but can easily pick up where you left off. A friend is someone you know if you don’t talk to regularly will not disappear. A friend is someone who genuinely cares about your well being and doesn’t ask the ‘How are you’ type questions. A friend will dig if they sense something is not right.
I mean I could go on, but I think these are the key elements of a real friend. These are the things that seperate acquaintenaces and a social group from friends. I will probably come back at a later stage and talk about love in the same way. However in the mean time, I have other posts to write so enjoy.

Ethics

The crap that goes through my head sometimes is amazing. I guess that’s why the posts I write are varied at times. However ethics is one that has always been in my head. I need to listen to those voices inside more often. My whole life I have considered my forte to be understanding ethics. I seem to be able to see all sides to a problem or scenario and how it impacts on everyone and everything, past, present and future.
Wikipedia mentioned ethics by saying a central aspect of ethics is “the good life”, the life worth living or life that is satisfying, which is held by many philosophers to be more important than moral conduct. The major problem is the discovery of the summum bonum, the greatest good. The right act can be identified as the one causing the greatest good and the immoral act as the one impeding it.
I see ethics as seeing something and assessing it etc with objectivity void of values, morals and judgments. By doing this you can see the implications something has on the greater consciousness.
All that being said, I am the first to admit I have had moments where I have acted in a way outside of certain widely accepted ethical ways, however I believe that I have always acted in an ethical manner. I live with a strong personal ethical code. However my personal ethics can be vastly different to that of society. I see that the ethical definition in the field of law explains it best by stating that ethics is itself is a matter of balancing “right versus right,” i.e. putting priorities on two things that are both right, but which must be traded off carefully in each situation.
No matter what I think personal ethics are important and like a belief structure help define us. Social, business and other forms of ethics can be much more complex.
For me I will remain true to my own belief system and will live in a manner that is ethical, no matter how difficult this can be. I always say that if you can say that you have done what you feel is right than you are being ethical. However you need to really be honest with yourself about whether what you are doing is right lol.

Recap

Well, I thought I would recap a few things from the past couple of weeks so that I can move forward and start posting normally again. Firstly the move. We moved successfully to our new house. Not without it’s dramas but it happened. The cost skyrocketed for the removalist and being around Christmas it was a little drama filled however we were in before Christmas so we are really happy with the new place. Of course there is still unpacking to happen but it is surprisingly getting there faster than I expected. The picture above is our loungeroom, not our furniture but it still is a great room.The move wouldn’t have been as good as it was if it wasn’t for the family. They were so helpful and I think without there help I would have had a meltdown.
At the same time we got to the Katie Noonan concert in Brisbane. Now this was a great night because HB got to see Katie again and that is a long story for another time, however we had a great time and below is a picture of HB and Katie.
Then came Christmas. What a great day. We woke up Christmas morning and that was really really good. We then got in the car and travelled the two and a half hours to dad’s place at the coast where we really had a great day. I’ll post pictures once I get them lol. We then drove back and spent the evening with the other side of the family which was just as good. This year I think was one of the best gift years I remember. It was great to see the whole family and although exhausting was definately memorable. On my side because of the distance it was the first time HB met a lot of my family. Mainly because we are quite spread out. My sister and her family were over from New Zealand and it was probably the first time in years that we were all together.
Because of the move, the week without internet access and all the celebrations in between lol, I am still looking to find a new routine. I’s all been thrown out a little. I think that now other than New Years everything is done with it will all start falling into place.
I want to say thank you to all those who sent Christmas cheer and Dan and Janek for the lovely card I received through snail mail, it was an unexpected bonus and really appreciated. I would like to say I hope you all had a beautiful Christmas and that as we near closer to 2009 that it turns out to be a great year.

Missing in Action

Well I’m back, actually we got the Internet back on Christmas Eve but I haven’t had a chance to touch it lol. So I will give a quick update now and I’ll come back and write about individual items when I get a chance. So since going offline:-
- We have moved house
- Spent a great Christmas with our families
- I still have another two weeks off work
- Found out some interesting and yet surprising details about someone I’ve featured the writings of on my blog.
- Spent a lot of time unpacking with plenty still to go
I’ll come back to some of these things later on but I would like to say sorry to those I have missed wishing a Merry Christmas whilst being offline. I feel a little out of whack and I’ll be endeavouring to catch up over the next week. I will be starting to look at New Year posts soon and will say hi and thankyou along the way. It’s been an incredibly busy time but will get back on track soon.
One of the things that made it interesting yesterday is that all the people I wanted to ring or text for Christmas didn’t happen or did when I could. It turns out that at my Dad’s new place mobile reception on my supposedly best network in the country was almost non existent and it was in suburbia. But anyway, I’ll be back soon with more.
