St George the Town & Suncorp

There is a lot of crap that goes on in this world and two of the recent things that have disappointed me or even pissed me off I needed to mention.

Firstly for those that are unaware, we here in Queensland have been going through a strange bout of rain. In fact it hasn’t stopped raining in about a week. I actually don’t remember this ever happening lol. However in amongst this is a little town a little bit further west called St George. Over the years I have spent a fair bit of time in St George but at the moment it is going through some pretty major flood conditions.

What is sad about this is those who have little are struggling trying to save their belongings whilst the wealthy land owners seem to only be concerned with the fact that their land has water. Don’t get me wrong, I’m pleased that their has been some rain when we have been in drought for so long. I just find it difficult when I find people acting in a way that is so selfish. I know I shouldn’t be surprised but I still am. Unfortunately as someone pointed out “these are the same farmers who won’t give jobs to the local indigenous but will hire the backpackers that pass through town”.

It reminds me of another situation going on at the moment. What I am about to say is what I have heard and I’d be happy to be corrected. Suncorp one of banking/insurance companies who I have supported for a very long time have decided to move some of there operations from Brisbane to Sydney. Now I’m not sure why they are doing this considering they are a Queensland organisation but it probably has to do with the huge business it has down south with GIO etc. So ok, they decide to move to Sydney which I understand. What I find difficult is that they have given a few weeks notice of redundancy to a lot of the staff in Brisbane and told them if they want to apply for the jobs in Sydney they will just have to wait until they are advertised and apply like anyone else. So much for corporate responsibility. The only reason I can see them doing this is so they don’t have to pay relocation costs for those who would be willing to go to Sydney.

All I can say is I hope that maybe one day people will look at what is right and not just at what is good for them.
